La Puma y Los Seres Humanos (The Mountain Lion and the Humans)

"Which direction are we going?" the son asked his father.

"To the right, son," he responded. The son and father ride bikes through the mountains of the forest, riding between the trees. They can feel the sun on their faces, although they have helmets that give shade to part of their skin. The air is cold, but their hearts circulate hot blood through their strong bodies.

The path has sharp curves. The son is in the lead of his father on the path. His red bicycle rides over rocks, and he maneuvers the curves with skill.

But he does not expect beings in his way.

"Mountain lion!" shouts the son. The animal is in the path, so large and marvelous. So wild. The son's bike skids with the pressure of the brakes, but the bike doesn't stop. The mountain lion pounces on the son, but the back tire swings and hits the mountain lion in the chest. The lion is thrown to the earth. The father stops his bike. The eyes of all are open. Looking.

All of the hearts in this part of the forest beat rapidly. All beings have fear. All are alive. Red-blood, red-blood, red-blood. The rhythm of the hearts fills their ears. No one moves. The eyes, the hearts, the sun on the skin, all is connected in this moment.

After an eternity of life in the time of a minute, the mountain lion is the first to move. Her eyes close and her head moves. She walks toward the trees.

The son and father watch the mountain lion while she disappears between the greens and browns of the forest. They look at each others' faces with eyes that say more of life than words could say. They continue on their bikes much slower than before, with a consciousness of the other beings in the forest.

We can always know the connection of the life of all beings. It is always there, in life, in the forest, in the air of the morning or of the afternoon. The hearts, the eyes, the blood red and strong always is connected to other beings. This is a truth of all the history of the life on this planet.

And you, where do you seek this connection?
